HOCKEY
For
Canadians, hockey is a traditional sport
identified by many as a symbol of our country.
Generally a male sport, I wanted to know how it
resonates with girls. I decided to take a stroll
down the street to talk to some women on the
University of Ontario Institute of Technology's
(UOIT) Women's Varsity Hockey team and find out
how hockey has impacted their lives. This is the
team's first season playing in the
inter-university hockey league, here in Ontario.
Most of the girls have played hockey since they
were 8 and up, and the majority of them started
figure skating or playing ringette...

Writer:
Karen Demers, Whitby, Ontario.
"I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, On and moved to the Durham
Region to attend UOIT for Criminology. Some of the best
times of my life were spent growing up with my family –
we travelled together, invented games to play and fed
off of each other’s dreams and ambitions. While I found
the teenage years hard and felt for most of the time
like I was on a roller coaster, my family was always
there to encourage me, love me and remind me to stay
steady and true to myself. Now that I have completed my
degree, I have evolved yet again. I have a desire to
help people discover their potential and worth in this
world. I am finishing up a diploma to become a
professional counsellor and hope to one day work
one-on-one with youth."
Something unique about Karen:
I use the word “Delicious” to
describe more than just food. To me, delicious is
anything that makes you feel happy, warm and excited on
the inside!
Karen's Passion:
Learning something new every day, trying something new
as often as I can, curling, soccer, reading, and
laughing with friends and family.
Karen's message:
“Act locally, think globally”. I
believe the changes you make in yourself, your family,
and your community are felt around the world. It’s like
the ripple effect – creating a ripple here can make a
splash on the banks of another country. You just never
know. |
